This. Place. Matters.

The Basilica of St. Josaphat has been chosen to participate in a national grant-making program.  We received a Planning Grant which funded the above “Call for Support” video.  They will also provide in-kind professional services leading to the opportunity to access up to $250,000 in capital grants.

The award comes as part of an unprecedented $14 million National Fund for Sacred Places announced by Partners for Sacred Places and the National Trust for Historic Preservation to assist aging churches in need of repair and restoration.  Partners for Sacred Places is the only national, nonsectarian, nonprofit organization dedicated to the sound stewardship and active community use of America’s older religious properties.  The Fund will provide up to $250,000 in capital grants, in addition to planning grants and an array of services, for at least 50 individual congregations from a diversity of faiths.

The Basilica was selected for its lasting architectural significance.  It is a stately example of the design work of Erhard Brielmaier who designed dozens of churches.  “We are delighted to be supporting such a significant landmark for the city of Milwaukee.  The Basilica continues to serve its community with impact and meaning.  We believe this project of national importance for the stewardship of America’s sacred places,” says Chad Martin, Director of the National Fund.

The National Fund for Sacred Places is a collaboration that builds on Partners for Sacred Places’ decades of work helping churches use best stewardship practices with their historic facilities in order to strengthen, serve, and celebrate their communities for the common good.

The Fund was launched with two grants totaling nearly $14 million from the Indiana-based Lilly Endowment Inc.

Raising Awareness

Have you noticed the new images of the Basilica of St. Josaphat popping up on your daily commute?

Perhaps you have seen the new directional signs on the off ramps and streets surrounding the Basilica?

The mission of the Foundation is to preserve and restore the Basilica of St. Josaphat.  However, that’s a little hard to do if people don’t know you exist or even how to get to the building!

Raising awareness of the Foundation, and what we do for the Basilica, has become a key component to working within our mission and completing projects.

Digital billboards rotate weekly. Keep your eyes peeled!
Digital billboards rotate weekly. Keep your eyes peeled!

We decided to promote the Foundation on freeway billboards to make the community aware of the Foundation.  We also wanted to get the Basilica out in front of people who would otherwise drive by unaware.  Get them curious about us and the building.

The directional signs on the off ramps and surrounding streets was a project that began a few years ago with a simple inquiry to the Department of Transportation.  Many of the Basilica’s visitors come from out of town and are unfamiliar with the area.  It could be difficult to navigate  your way to the Basilica without any directional signs for help.

We learned that our own bill needed to be created in order for freeway directional signs to be put up.  In July our bill became law, now it will be much easier to find your way to the Basilica!

The freeway directional signs have now been installed.  There has been wonderful news coverage about the signs and the Foundations efforts!
